Christmas Cards

We like to personalize our Christmas Cards. Note, it's not a holiday card or season's greeting card, it is most definitely Christmas. Each year we try to come up with a theme that summarizes the year that has passed. Some years turn out better than others, but they are definitely unique. Enjoy!

2023: And the Oscar goes to Elvis

We've been wanting to do theatre themed since we moved to London. We've seen a lot of A-list talent while we've been here. But Elvis's passing made it clear he needed to be center stage.

2022: Calendar Reboot

We had very limited time to put this together this year so we followed the Hollywood formula and pushed a reboot of our 2001 classic down people's throats. Record breaking profits ensued.

2021: Union Jack

Fully embroiled now in British society we opted to go for a simple take on the Union Jack flag. Apologies to the Irish component of the flag for it was removed for purely aesthetic reasons.

2020: Board Game Encore

In the pandemic year we moved yet again. So we recycled the 2018 card and switched it London instead of Paris.

2019: Dog's Anatomy

Not a good year for the pooches as both of them had major surgeries. So we did a riff on Grey's Anatomy. See the inspiration here.

2018: Board Game

We moved to France this year which had no ends of ups and downs, kinda like the highs and lows one experiences in a board game. See the inspiration here.

2017: Road Trip

We did a lot of driving this year so the theme of our card was obvious. Road Trip!!!

2016: Puzzle

2016 was puzzling. Not so many trips. Plus, as we did, in fact do a number of puzzles, the theme seemed obvious.

2015: Windows 10

Perhaps you heard, but Windows 10 came out this year. And while we still don't have it yet, thought it was a good inspiration nonetheless.

2014: Beach Dreams

Kinda lame this year. We had this nice picture of the dogs as the beach and all we could come up with as this.

2013: The Year of the Mosaic

For whatever reason a number of our trips this year revealed some spectacular Roman ruins that preserved absolutely amazing floor mosaics. Just breathtaking. So our motivation for this year's card was pretty clear cut.

2012: Collectable Cards

In each issue of Time magazine there is a two page photograph, usually quite fascinating, called the Lightbox. We took this one large photo format and combined it with the collectors issues you get sometimes with other magazines where they have an issue with several different covers. Only here can you see all five!

2011: Homage to the "The Money Pit"

This year was all about the house. Lots and lots of work was done this year after a three year hiatus. We once again did a take off of a movie poster, this time "The Money Pit." See the original here.

2010: Homage to the Movie "2010"

For some reason we kind of quickly leaned towards doing some knock off of a movie poster this year. And given the year, we decided we could do a homage to the movie "2010." See the original here.

2009: World Map

This year we did a lot of traveling. Even for us. So we went for a world map pointing out all of the places we visited during the year.

2008: Flakes

We were really, really running late on doing it this year. So much so we almost abandoned the whole Christmas card idea. But at the last minute we came up with the Flakes idea. Lame? Possibly.

2007: Mount Doom

The best and most challenging hike we have ever done was the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand. We had this picture of us with Mount Ngauruhoe in the background that was just so amazing we just started with that and went from there.

2006: The Bilbao Empire

We spent Thanksgiving in Rome this year. Rome has a lot of history and history invariably involves timelines and that gave us our idea. We particular like the part about sacking Rome.

2005: Postcards

We tend to send ourselves postcards of where we have been. And then we put them on the bulletin board back home. This year our bulletin board was fairly impressive so we took that as our cue. Also, Lola joins the family.

2004: Christmas Tree

Of course this year we got married and we needed to have a wedding picture as the focal point. But then our inspiration dried up and you got a dried up Christmas tree as this year's card.

2003: Crossword Puzzle

We thought we were so clever this year. Instead of just an arsenal of pictures, we would make our card interactive by adding a crossword puzzle. Most of you just asked us for the answers instead of looking on the back. Lame!

2002: Jake's Journal

Jake has by now fully ingrained himself in our lives and we thought it would be fun to do our Christmas card this year from his perspective. Most of you thought it was very cute.

2001: Calendar

This year, with our move from Madison to Richmond, adjusting to new jobs a new city and buying our first house, we found that everything kind of boiled down to a major event per month. So we decided to do a calendar of pictures.

2000: Entertainment Weekly

We have always had a subscription to Entertainment Weekly in order to keep up with the entertainment world. We particular enjoyed reading the HotSheet every issue to see how much we got the jokes. So we used that as our theme this year.

1999: Budget Travel

An indication that we would one day be world travelers, we used the Budget Travel magazine's table of contents as our inspiration this year. Just think what 10 years later would bring!

1998: Sama Sentinel

Our first Christmas card together! We kept it in the familar Christmas newsletter format, but with a twist. Eric had yet to make an appearance, but he is briefly mentioned.
